Overview

The supplier claims a product is A-grade stainless steel, pure cotton, or genuine leather when it is actually an inferior material. To an untrained eye, the difference is invisible — until the product rusts, shrinks, cracks, or fails safety tests.

How It Works

  1. Material downgrade — 304 stainless becomes 201/430; pure cotton becomes a polyester blend; genuine leather becomes PU/再生革.
  2. Spec inflation — overstated thickness, weight, thread count, battery capacity, wattage, or purity.
  3. False documentation — provide a self-made or forged "material certificate" that looks official.

1. Specify exact grades

  • Write precise specs: "SUS304 stainless, 1.0mm," "100% combed cotton, 40s yarn," "genuine top-grain leather, 1.2–1.4mm."
  • Reference standards (GB/T, ASTM, ISO, AISI) in the contract.

2. Require third-party material test reports

  • Demand a test report from SGS/BV/Intertek that verifies composition, and check the report number online.
  • For key materials, specify the test standard and pass criteria.

3. Independent sample testing

  • Draw your own samples and send them to an independent lab before and during production.
  • For metals, use a handheld XRF analyzer (or have the inspector do it) to verify alloy grade on the spot.

4. Inspection checkpoints

  • Add material verification to the pre-shipment inspection checklist (thickness gauge, weight scale, fiber content, XRF).

  • Contractually state that material substitution is a fundamental breach with full refund/replacement liability.
